One Green Tip every Friday of 2020 By Gouri Mirpuri Founder of The Learning Farm

WEEK ONE: Replacing all disposable pens for one fountain pen & ink. Going back to when life was simpler.
WEEK2 TIP: My 2020 gift for every occasion will be a tree planted at TREEDOM.net or a donation to Coolearth.org ....”Who needs more stuff anyway?”
WEEK 3 TIP :  Switch back to solid soap, and save money/water/landfills/fossil fuels. Here is why:
WEEK 4 TIP: Replace pencils, Save Trees. Changing all my pencils for one great mechanical pencil & refills. Using 0.7 mm so it doesn’t break so easily. Donating all wooden pencils to a school.
WEEK 5 TIP: Stop all annoying magazines/brochures/donation letters you never asked for, and really don’t read. Call the company, or go on their web-site to leave them a message. Takes a minute, saves tons of wasted paper/ink/stamps/fossil fuel for delivery.
WEEK 6 TIP: Switch off your computer at night. Standby/sleep mode is almost as good. But switching off also reboots the system, avoids system issues and puts less stress on the system. Imagine your life without a break. And don’t forget screen savers are also energy wasters.
WEEK 7 TIP: Use a paper gift bag, it’s re-useable. Don’t wrap your gifts anymore. It also saves time
WEEK 8 TIP: Sign @ my local shoe store, “Everything is within walking distance, if you keep enough time.”
WEEK 9 TIP: Changing a diet is easier in small steps. Step One: If you are still eating beef, cut it back to only on weekends. Beef is an expensive protein, with the environment paying most of the costs.

WEEK 10 TIP: Pulses/Beans/Lentils are your best friends in the time of Corona. A healthy and cheap protein which is easy to store and just lasts and lasts. With zillions of quick and easy online receipts. Saves you dashing out to the supermarket for yet more food quite so often.

WEEK 11 TIP: Make it virtual. This crazy pandemic week in particular we all realized the value of making conference calls instead of every interaction having to be a face-to-face. When it's over, continue to save yourself time and money while doing the right thing for the environment.

WEEK 12 TIP: Use your imagination! Plant-based proteins are so much healthier, cheaper, better for the environment. It just takes a bit of effort to not keep going back unthinkingly to the same boring animal meats.

WEEK 13 TIP: "Go shopping in your own wardrobe". These few quarantined weeks should remind us we really have enough. No better time than now to sort, donate, refresh...basically minimize our mountains of things. Ask Marie Kondo if you don't know wher
e to start!

WEEK 14 TIP: Replace paper kitchen towels with dishcloths to wipe up spills, and racks or newspaper to drain fried food. I love Swedish Dishcloths. One replaces 17 rolls of paper towels, super absorbent, more hygienic than a sponge and more environmentally sound than microfibre. It air dries quickly, so it doesn't breed bacteria or smell.

WEEK 15 TIP: This video got me thinking about stretching food supplies, sensibly. I'm sure you have a zillion more ideas, now is the best time to make these changes in our fridges and pantries.

WEEK 16 TIP: It's finally spring. Mini gardens with all your kitchen herbs are a great hobby no matter where you are locked in. Easiest to grow: mint, chives, thyme, sage. Best from cuttings (remember to root in water first) basil/mint/rosemary/coriander/oregano/dill. Enjoy!

WEEK 17 TIP: Sprouting any beans and lentils (you should have bought a good supply in WEEK 12) has great nutritional benefits. Simple method: soak overnight, put in a colander lined below and covered above with wet tissue, lightly water and give it a good shake each morning. You can spout most anything in two days, then use raw or cooked.
