As a result, the Madura Strait waters were contaminated with microplastics. They took sediment and water samples on January 13 and examined them on January 14-27 2022. They took samples in East Sukolilo and West Sukolilo, in waters where there is a lot of plastic waste, dominated by domestic waste such as bottles, sachets, and crackle.
"From all samples from point I (Goa Petapa Beach) to point VI (East Kamal Port) it can be said that they contain microplastics. This means that the waters are contaminated with microplastics,” said Agil Silva Asmarani, the research team, last February. The results showed that the highest abundance of microplastics at stations III and V were docks and densely populated settlements on Jalan Baturubuh. The bad impact of microplastics
"From this study, it shows that domestic waste that is disposed of in coastal waters or that is stranded will cause the emergence of microplastics. This condition correlates with the absence of trash cans and transportation of garbage.” The condition is also exacerbated by the activities of fishermen and ferry boats that produce waste such as nets, damaged fishing lines and are immediately dumped into the waters. Household waste that is disposed of indiscriminately causes pollution to the coastal environment. The bad impact of microplastics on the environment and marine biota, he said, could threaten marine ecosystems and cause various diseases. Agil said, this microplastic is a piece of plastic that is less than five mm in size. Microplastics in water can be consumed by aquatic biota which has the potential to cause metabolic disorders. Microplastic contamination in the body, he said, can also interfere with some organ functions, such as the digestive tract, reduce growth rates, inhibit enzyme production, decrease steroid hormones, and affect reproduction and have higher toxicity. She said polluted waters were very dangerous. Garbage that accumulates around the waters will be degraded into microplastics leading to polluted waters.
The most influential impact is on marine biota, because the size of the microplastic makes it easy to swallow. This, he said, can lead to digestive, respiratory, food chain and reproductive disorders. The research team urges the Bangkalan Government to improve public facilities such as the provision of waste disposal sites (TPS) and waste transportation by the Environmental Service. Local governments are also asked to join the clean-up movement. The government and students, he said, could do outreach to the public for the movement to reduce the use of plastic.
Integrated waste processing sites (TPST)
Eka Chlara Budiarti, senior researcher with Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (Ecoton) said these studies are important as a database in the area. She said, plastic waste is the main source of contaminating waters, such as plastic waste in Sukolilo Waters. According to Chlara, there must be a special policy that focuses on handling the source. By suppressing waste from the source, slowly, plastic waste can be controlled. Prigi Arisandi, founder and Executive Director of Ecoton, said that the Bangkalan government must prioritize handling this waste problem. The waste problem, he said, cannot be taken lightly. “The high level of plastic pollution is a threat to the fisheries sector. There needs to be a regulation that prohibits single-use plastic and a movement to sort waste from the house," he said. In addition, the Bangkalan Government needs to provide facilities for garbage bins and integrated waste processing sites (TPST) in each village.
