Microplastic detected in Surabaya air

Piles of plastic waste cover mangrove roots, Monday (30/8/2021)
A new finding by Ecoton (Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation) states that microplastics detected in the air in the mangrove area of Surabaya are three times that of the Benowo Garbage Power Plant location. "Research at the location of plastic waste disposal in the Wonorejo mangrove area shows 110 microplastic particles in the air that are captured by the air reservoir for 10 hours, this condition is 3 times compared to the test of microplastic particles in the air around PLTSA Benowo,” Eka Chlara Budiarti said.

furthermore, this ecoton microplastic researcher stated that microplastic particles come from plastic crumbs that accumulate and are trapped between mangrove roots and then suspended in the air that blows on the beach. This condition is very worrying because with microplastic contamination in the air it will be carried to the mainland in the city of Surabaya.

Ecoton together with students of the Department of Chemistry at the State Islamic University, Maulana Malik Ibrahim, Malang, conducted a microplastic contamination test in the air during August 2021. by placing a vacuum cleaner for 1 hour, then the air that is accommodated in a special container is viewed under a stereo microscope with a magnification of 100 times. from the monitored locations it was found that the air in the city of Surabaya was contaminated with microplastics. The source is suspected to be from illegal plastic waste dumping sites.

Every week, several communities carry out activities to collect plastic waste from the Wonorejo mangrove trees, today Ecoton and River Warrior are freeing trees from plastic waste. "We need seriousness from the provincial government and the Surabaya city government to clean up plastic waste in Wonorejo, besides bringing a threat to seafood, microplastic suspended in the air will have a widespread impact in the form of a threat to the health of the citizens of Surabaya," said Thara Bening Sandrina, the coordinator of River Warrior expressed his hope to East Java Provincial Government and Surabaya City Government to be able to clean up plastic waste in Wonorejo
